I've been having a fine time with my class. It is more work than I expected: a new 90 minute lecture every week, plus prep work associated with the films we use. I've tried to give them some insights into US management and business practices and concepts, plus discuss the downsides of many of these practices. Last week we discussed business strategy and franchising....starting off with a visit to a nearby McDonald's. They are everywhere here, though not universally popular. (Most of my students don't go there often, if at all, and prefer Kentucky Fried Chicken if they want fast food). After that we watched SuperSize Me.
About half of my students are from Japan, the other half from China. It is a fun group. They pay attention though often they are tired--most have part time jobs that keep them up late at night. All work hard at their English, and I try to slow down my delivery enough that they can understand what I'm saying. In-class discussions between students and faculty are rare here, so after the films I'll usually ask them to talk about it amongst themselves. I've also had fun working with my student assistant, Akie Tanaka, who helps to translate my lecture notes and take care of things for me around campus. She will be at TESC this fall.
This has been a great experience and working with these students has certainly helped me to become a better teacher. I'll miss them.
